Harry Hyde was a legendary NASCAR crew chief who had an illustrious career in the sport. He was born on November 20, 1925, in Brownfield, Maine. Hyde began his NASCAR career as a mechanic in the early 1960s and worked his way up to become a crew chief for some of the top drivers in the sport.
Some of the notable drivers Hyde worked with include Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker, Geoff Bodine, and Tim Richmond. He won a total of 56 races as a crew chief, including the Daytona 500 with Bobby Allison in 1988. Hyde also won the 1970 NASCAR championship with driver Bobby Isaac.
Hyde was known for his no-nonsense approach to racing and his ability to get the most out of his drivers and race cars. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001. Harry Hyde passed away on May 13, 1996, but his legacy as one of the greatest crew chiefs in NASCAR history lives on.
